"Just another example...."

I hope some of you watched the end of the Butler and Purdue game that just finished....It' not always what you do during the first 39 minutes...It' what you do when the game is not just on the line, but "in YOUR hands!!  ("Freethrows...freethrows....freethrows"!)

Game 9: West Vigo 54 Crestwood (Paris) 48

Against Otter Creek we closed out our "2nd quarter" of the season....We finished that portion with a 1-3 record and 1-7 on the season to that point. As I told you guys from day 1, I am not looking to put the emphasis on "wins and losses" with this group. I am more concerned with, "are we getting better....are we able to COMPETE" with our opponents. (we must learn to "compete" consistantly before we can begin to worry about "winning" consistantly) We have made progress in some aspects, and yet we still struggle with what I call, "fundamental basketball knowledge". We play hard for the most part and that is what I expect. What I want to see us do however is to develop a level of "basketball knowledge" that lines up with that effort.

We need to get to the point of making our philosophy, "work smarter, not harder". The best way to do this is to learn from "what we are doing wrong." (Right now we are working harder to "cover-up" our mistakes, rather than recognizing those mistakes and simply correcting them to begin with.)

Against the Woodrow Wilson, Honey Creek, Otter Creek and Sarah Scott teams, the passes that get "tipped" or "deflected" by Crestwood and Chauncey Rose, are easy steals and lay-ups. The silly, "not thinking" fouls we get called for against a Chauncey, become actual points...The indecision, the fear, the basic lack of execution, becomes not just points, but "game breaking" opportunities for the better teams. This is because they "know" what they are doing...They "know" what these opportunities mean...They "know" how to take advantage of these situations. This mindset of  "accepting" mediocre play as, "the best I can do" is UNACCEPTABLE! Case in point, I heard the comments, "we did better at the foul line..."  The reality of this statement is, "no, WE didn't....Brandon did!" (excluding the missed front end of 2, "1 and 1" opportunities in the 4th quarter...) WE still missed "13" free-throws! When you take away what Brandon contributed last night, (8 of 10) we were only, "5 of 18" as a team...On the season, our opponents have shot 45 of 80(56%) at the foul line. (It was 61% before last nights game, which is definitely nothing to be excited about.) We on the other hand have been to the foul line, (I had to double check this because it just floors me...) "134" times, and we have only converted on "52" of them! (A pitiful 39%.) That will not get it done and I will "never" accept that as o.k.! It would be one thing if we didn't shoot freethrows in practice that much. But we shoot a ton of them.

It' simply a lack of concentration...A lack of  "form and routine"....You can't step to the line thinking about how you "hope" your going to do it. It should be a matter of, "I know what I did when I made the last one and I am going to do the same thing and get it done!)

We failed to execute the "mental" side of the game all night long. I still don't know how a team at this age does not comprehend the basic things of recognizing when we are in the "bonus", that we will be in the bonus the rest of the half on every foul. Instead we, look around when a foul is called like a bunch of lost sheep not knowing what to do...waiting for someone to point us in a direction to go next. How we don't understand the concept of the "possession arrow", that when the arrow is pointed toward our goal that we are getting the ball out of bounds. (Yet once again, we stand around waiting for someone to tell us, "what do I do now?")Not to mention the fact that for some strange reason, when I put someone into the game, that between the time I tell you to "go in for, so and so..." (we continually), in that 10 seconds that it takes to go to the scorers table and out onto the floor, either forget who we're going in for, or just decide not to tell the person. Either way, these are so basic, so fundamental parts to the game, and we still can't do them.

I know you probably feel like, "dang coach, we won last night"....and my response is simply, "in spite of our best efforts to do otherwise..."  I don't like to keep on you guys like this anymore than I would hope that you like hearing/seeing it. WE just have to do a better job. I include myself in this as well guys. On more than 1 occasion last night I was slow in my substitutions to get the right person in for certain situations. That is unacceptable and I need to do a better job of game management, just so you know.

This is "a team" and it will take a "TEAM" effort to get to the next level of our execution on the floor. Nobody can take a "mental" break. We have to make sure that at the very least, we are mentally ready for situations to happen before they happen. That is why I put you guys into a "spread offense" last night rather than to keep the offense in a normal routine. We have to learn how to play with the lead. I know we don't have much experience at that right now, but if you plan to improve you have to plan for "where your going" not just where your at. We struggled with taking care of the ball...We struggle with getting the ball to the right person(s) and not getting "spooked" and just throwing it to the "first available"....We struggled with not recognizing our own individual "strengths and weaknesses..." (if you can't dribble very well in practice and nobody is around you, why would you think that during a "contested game" you would suddenly become a ball handler?) The answer is, you won't! In addition, you have to recognize that when the game is close and you are in the lead, the other team is going to be taking chances, doing more pushing, more shoving and the refs may not give you a call....You can't lose your "mental toughness" and fall into the trap of losing your composure. You have to "see" all of these situations before they happen....You have to anticipate them, not be surprised by them!

We will continue marching on....Lord willing, some of these things will start to "click". In the mean time, we just have to put forth our best effort each and every day in "PRACTICE"....so we can better execute in the game!   :)

Oh yeah, we finally had a little balance in our scoring as well...(which will come when we score more points than the average age of the players...) We had 2 in double figures and 2 more that were close. (1 had 9 and another had 8...) That' a good way to start this 3rd quarter of the season....Let' keep it up and work on "those little things" mentioned before that ALWAYS make a big difference in how the game goes... :)

Player Profile...."Bailey Sherrill"

Bailey is another one that has made strides this season. He spent the early part of the year, (like most of his teammates...) trying to figure things out. He has started to learn that it' the "little things" that make a difference in this game. Bailey has one unique quality...."he' hasn't met a shot he doesn't like". If he decides to stay with basketball, (I hear he' a pretty good swimmer...) and works on those "little things", Bailey can probably make his mark at the high school level. Bailey, like most of his teammates is getting a late start on the importance of fundamentals, but that doesn't mean he can't work himself into being a good basketball player, it just means there is more work to be done...

Bailey is already working the "varsity" scene as an 8th grader...I observed him working his horn at a recent ballgame at the high school...(R.I.P. Clarence Clemons....there' a new, "Big Man" in town!)    :)

Game 8: Otter Creek 43 West Vigo 25

"Fundamentals"....Freethrows, "3 for 16"....Turn-overs, "28". We can't keep making the same mistakes....We had waaay too many break-downs on the execution side of our offense, not to mention the above wasted opportunities, does not bode well for a good outcome. We have got to figure out a way to make the needed changes to become more competitive.

Otter Creek is a good team, but we made them better than what they are by the way we failed to make the needed changes. We don't have time to dwell on tonights game. We need to show up with a better committment to take care of the ball, concentrate more at the foul line, and play with more urgency at the beginning of the game and not wait until the last part of the game.

I hope we can make these changes so that we can get back on the right track!

Player Profile..."Jordan Ross"

"Rossi" as I refer to him, continues to show more and more of his natural athletic ability each week. He has become a pretty reliable option from the outside for us and as he continues to get a better grasp of the "cerebral" part of the game, I think he will become a pretty good basketball player if he chooses to keep with it.

Rossi has made the best of his opportunities this season and I look forward to seeing him "step-up" that much more as we go along. His willingness to work hard and stay aggressive make him a viable part of our teams progress, and Lord willing, greater success.

I have also learned recently that "Rossi" likes to "chat with older women"....He just needs to make sure to do a closer background check from now on...I'm sure he doesn't want to experience his coach' wrath.  ;)

"Good practice..."

Just wanted to let you guys know again how good it was to see how hard you worked during the scrimmage today...(especially during the last 10 minutes...) I think some things are starting to get clearer for some of you and you can tell the more you get "comfortable" with what we've tried to instill, the more "natural" the execution is...Now before you guys start getting a little "puffed up", I said "10 minutes"....(Our games are 24 minutes, minimum!)

Just keep working hard and I promise you the results will keep coming....  :)

Game 7: Honey Creek 51 W.V. 21

Working "smarter and not harder" is what we need to do. For the most part it was not a lack of effort tonight, but a lack of "adjusting" to basic things on the court. Once again we are our own worst enemy. (Not to take away anything from Honey Creek at all) We had so many opportunities to make strides in that direction tonight and yet we get "intimidated" by a team that is obviously not as physical as we are, but they are able to execute. As I told you during halftime, "We need to learn to play like we belong on the same court"...I am not saying that the outcome would be different but when  you just take a step back and look at things such as "freethrows" (6 for 21)              "Missed lay-ups"(over a dozen) Poor adjustments on the press, (Once again, we only see what is right in front of our faces ("tunnel vision") and don't recognize anything outside of our direct line of sight. All of these things have nothing to do with who we are playing. It has everything to do with what "we are not doing". I am sure you are getting as tired of hearing me say these things as I am of having to say them...We are not talented enough to surrender this many scoring opportunities each and every game. We are very capable of competing at a much higher level.

We are 1-2 in this "quarter" of our season. We can end it at .500 with a better effort in our next game. Let' work to make that a reality.

Player Profile...."Eli Atterson"

To say that Eli is a "unique" individual would be a "major" understatement. I can honestly say that he has a personality that is strangely closely related to his demeaner on the basketball court...."all over"! Eli is one of those individuals that just reminds me of the saying, "if you throw enough spaghetti against the wall, somethings bound to stick..." I can ask him what the situation is or what is going on and he will look right at me and just say, "you know coach, I don't know...(with a big grin to boot)" but he will most definitely give what he can while he' out there...(you just don't know what that may be) I think Eli has the athleticism to be a decent ball player and like most of the kids on this team, it' up to him if he chooses to work to harness that natural ability and focus it into a "structured role" on the court..."Time" will once again reveal that answer.

On the lighter side when it comes to Eli.....NO, WAIT....With Eli, it' always, "the lighter side". I guess if you were to choose a "character disposition" for Eli, his would be, "live for the moment", because that' exactly what he does...  :)

"Practice on Friday"

I have not been given a practice schedule for December still, but I have been given our gym time for tomorrow. We will be practicing after school. I am still waiting to find out which gym. If I do not re-post otherwise, plan on the "new gym".

"December practice schedule..."

I have still not been given a gym schedule from Mr. Azar for December so I cannot tell you what time we practice on Friday. What I can tell you is that we play Honey Creek on Thursday and we will be wearing white again...I will post a schedule for the upcoming week as soon as I get a schedule.

Game 6: W.V. 39 Chauncey Rose 15

As I mentioned to you early on, I am not much on "wins and losses", especially when they don't mean that much in the midst of a regular season. I would trade tonight' win against Chauncey for a "quality game" (4 full quarters of "high level" competitive play) against the likes of a Sarah Scott; Honey Creek; Woodrow Wilson or even Otter Creek...

We can sometimes get too wrapped up in the winning and losing and forget what really matters in the "big picture" of things. What really matters to me is "how we execute"...(eliminating our unforced turn-overs") "how we are learning our plays"..."how we are defending our opponent"...These are the things that we can control. These are the things we MUST control so that we can move forward to compete with the above mentioned teams.

We had tonight to enjoy this game, but as you well know, we have Honey Creek on Thursday and we have a chance to not only redeem ourselves for that 2nd half meltdown we had against them the first time, but also to prove to ourselves that we CAN put together 4 good quarters against a good basketball team.

Come to practice tomorrow with a mind-set of just that...

Player Profile...."Logan Benefiel"

Logan continues to demonstrate a willingness to "work to improve". He is showing a little more aggressiveness in practice and in his game situations. Logan is a "work in progress" and I know he will continue to improve as he continues to gain more confidence. I see Logan' future as a bright one if he chooses to continue putting in the time to bring "his game" along.

Logan has been dubbed, "Big Country"...His size can be a "big" advantage for him in his upcoming years if wants to utilize it on the court. Logan continues to be a pleasure to work with...  :)

Game 5: Honey Creek 48 W.V. 16

Another game of "What happened, and where did we go..."  This is a theme that is fairly common when trying to adapt to a new concept..."Enthusiasm and adrenaline" will carry you for only so long...and then you have to have an "understanding of what is needed" to sustain any type of previous success...In the last couple of games we have learned we are not there yet...(but we ARE making steps in the right direction...)

"Learning to compete" is a necessary step to advance towards the goal of "winning"...You don't just show up with a game plan and say, "now we can win"...If it was that easy, there would be no such thing as a "lop-sided" win/loss"...As I thought about last nights game, it didn't take long to figure out what the "obvious" issues were/are for our team...In the first half alone, we missed at least 6 (a generous figure btw...) open lay-ups, not to mention the countless turnovers...(additionally, we were a pathetic, 0 - 8 from the foul line! This does not bode well for a positive outcome...and yet we were down only 4 at half.)

There are two schools of thought that we can take....1st, we can say, "well at least we stayed with them for a half..." OR we can have the mindset, "I don't want to let this be the height of our success...to play only 1 good half of basketball every game....I WANT MORE...I AM CAPABLE OF MORE!"

If your answer is the latter, the desired results come about in practice, not in the game...As I told you guys in the locker room, we have to work harder to simulate "game situations" in practice so we don't get surprised by the speed of the actual game...This transition takes discipline, self motivation and a willingness to not accept failure as an option...(I am not speaking to "winning vs losing", but rather "competing at the highest level your capable of"  versus "rolling over when the heat gets turned up because that' what we have always done"...

There is a great story in the bible that I always think about when I am in situations that I recognize I am at the cross-roads of these two choices....In the Book of Judges, a man by the name of Gideon was called to lead his people into battle against a great army. Gideon had 32,000 men to do battle. God told Gideon,  "that is too many for this battle"...He went on to tell him to tell the people, "whoever is afraid, whoever is fearful of this battle....you should leave now" After Gideon gave this instruction, he only had "10,000 men left"!!

But God said, "that is still too many"...So he gave the instructions to have them go down to a nearby brook and of the men that dipped their hand into the water to drink rather than to "lap it up" like a dog...would be the chosen ones for the battle....After they had gone to the brook, only "300" reached to drink of the water with their hand!!

These were the "chosen" ones to do battle...The story goes on to say that these 300 men went into battle against a massive Midian and Amalekite army....(Btw, they went into battle armed with  "a trumpet and a pitcher with a candle inside it...") They were divided into 3 companies of 100 men...At the sounding of Gideon' trumpet, the men began blowing their trumpets and making noise and breaking the pitchers as they advanced...The startled Midianites and Amalikites thought they were surrounded by a "great army" so rather than fight, they fled....

The point I am wanting to make with you is not about the battle...The point is about the "faith" that it takes to "go into battle"...It doesn't take a huge number...it doesn't take the greatest armed soldiers(aka "most talented athletes) It doesn't even take the best equipment (facilities...$200.00 shoes...etc..) It only takes a belief that "you are behind the cause" (you truly believe in...) what you are going into battle for...

I have always told my players, "you don't have to be the best, as long as you compete at your best"...(Winning and losing will take care of itself...) The question is simply, "do you want to participate...Are you willing to sacrifice "self" for the better of the whole just to be included in the final count. (Or do you want to retreat because of fear...fear of pushing yourself beyond the same obstacles...)

You have come a long way from where you were when we first began this journey. But now is the time to decide if you want to go farther....I know you guys are capable of much more...The obstacle we face right now is "ourselves"....It is manifested in the form of "inconsistancy"....I want us to "go through it", not around it...I hope you guys are ready to get beyond "1 half" of basketball, I know I am...

Let' complete this journey and see what happens....   :)

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Player Profile...."David Fiddler"

David has shown time and time again that he isn't afraid of "hard work". David continues to demonstrate a "desire to improve" by his work ethic...He is constantly pushing himself to be a better player. This team will succeed because of what David brings, and more importantly, this team will not fail for the same reason.

As  a coach, you just love those kind of players...I believe because of his willingness to work hard, stay aggressive and listen and do what is asked of him, he has not only a bright future in store this year, but also at the next level as well...

On the lighter side of things, I know for a fact that David is a caring young man. Just a few weeks ago when I had told the boys to stretch in the hallway before a practice, I came out into the hallway only to find David coming "to the aide" of a young lady that I am sure he thought to be distressed....(Why else would he not be stretching...) Like I said, he is always trying to "do his best"....   ;)

THURSDAY: THANKSGIVING

"Blog access...."

Please let your family members as well as any of your friends who have been following the blog and would like to continue that they will have to "join this site" to follow the blog...I didn't realize when I clicked to an "updated version" of the blog that it changed the access requirement...At this time I haven't figured out how to change it back...Let them know I am sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.

Game 4: Sarah Scott 49 W.V. 26

Making progress is seldom ever "quick or easy". Having said that, as I was telling you after the game last night, we are making progress. We were able to play a pretty competitive first half (down 24-17) and that meant that we actually put 2 quarters together "back to back". That is what I call "making progress"... I am not sure if you are familiar with the term, "walk before you can run", but that is the situation for us right now...I have been asking quite a bit of you guys and it' with this understanding...We have to create a "solid" foundation based on fundamental principals that most of you are either not familiar with or are not "rooted" with...This takes time to adapt to and then more time to instill into a "anticipation of expectation" , (a fancy way to say, "created instinct") rather than "see...process...react...execute"...This takes time and will only come as we continue to not just "see and react" but when we are able to retain what we have been through and "see" the situation the next time in advance of it actually happening...

Once again there were some areas worth recognizing from last nights game...Once again we continue to make strides at the foul line...(8 of 11) with 5 different guys going to the line. Also, the level of our "start of the game" aggressiveness was much better than it has been for the first 3 games...These are all "positives" we can continue to build upon....

Like I mentioned to you before, I like to break the season into "4 game quarters"....Last night we concluded our 1st quarter of games. Albeit we are winless, we are not the same team we were when the season started...We have made those steps I have been talking about and that is what I call "progress"...If we continue to work hard in practice, the results will take care of itself...Just stay focused to what I am asking you to do...Keep asking yourself, "what is it that I need to improve on to help make this "TEAM" better and "what can I do to make my "TEAMMATES" better...  :)

"Final reminder...."

Just wanted to give you guys a final reminder about the "2nd season" registration...I need to know by the end of practice tomorrow if you want to participate...(Send me a text; email or message on my f/b wall...)

Player Profile...."Clayton O'Neal"

Clayton is the 3rd of my "vertically challenged" 3 munchkins....Clayton gives us another guard that "can be" quick, (that is when he goes at it...) and create some turnovers for us...(The nice thing about all of them is that all 3 are capable of being a threat at both ends of the court if they set their minds to it...) I think that Clayton, (like most of his teammates) with continued hard work and desire, can be someone who can really play an important role for us through the rest of this year...I would love to see Clayton take advantage of his quickness and his shooting touch from the outside and become a bigger threat at both ends like I know he is capable of...Time will tell. :)

On the lighter side, I first need to try to figure out how to mark which "goal" we are actually shooting at for him as well...I don't believe further explaination is necessary....(I know you didn't think THAT would just go by un-noticed now did you young man!) ;)

Game 3: No. Clay "B" 61 W.V. "B" 24

This game was more about missed opportunities...As I mentioned more than once tonight we had our "ball handling" weaknesses exposed tonight in both games, but especially in this one. We have to work harder in practice on the drills we run so we can better compete when we face aggressive opponents that put pressure on the ball.

We did have a few nice plays turned in tonight and I want to see you guys continue to work hard and keep pushing yourself to improve.

I want to note the effort put forth on the defensive end by Clayton Baugh. Clayton played hard tonight and a couple times it lead directly to nice steals and points for us...Now we need to get everyone to fight through the temptation to "take it easy" and really work hard and push oneself to make some good things happen ....

Game 2: No. Clay "A" 50 W.V. "A" 35

I am starting to think the answer may be "suicides, 17' and push-ups"....We will see if that is needed to motivate in the future...I was pleased with the effort that we started the game out with..We showed some signs of improvement and that' what we need to continue to do...

We reached a couple "milestones" of sorts that are worth mentioning tonight. It was nice to see us win a quarter. We out-scored No. Clay in the first, 11-10 and nearly got them in the 4th, falling 14-13...Those are nice steps for us as we move onward.

Another area I want to note is in regards to Nick' performance at the foul line. Nick converted 6 of 7 free throws. Those are numbers I can live with for sure...

Let' make sure we don't look back at this game, but rather forward to tonights game with Sarah Scott. They will probably be more at the tempo of Woodrow Wilson than No. Clay, so we need to show up ready to match the intensity and continue to improve... :)

"Picture Day..."

Team and individual pictures will be taken on November 29th after school.
MAKE SURE TO TELL YOUR PARENTS!

Player Profile...."Jordan Schaffer"

Jordan is probably best suited for the point guard position, but sometimes you have to shift players around to hopefully develop a better combination for "the team" as a whole...Jordan has shown that when he gets a rhythem going he can be a very tough perimeter shooter for us. I think as he continues to see the importance of "solid defense" and just working hard while he' on the court, he can have a lot to look forward to at the high school level.

Jordan is the other half of the "ying and yang" brothers (C. Baugh)....I am not sure if they were ever once joined at the hip, but they do seem to show some very similar characteristics...(The one noticeable difference is in their choice of baseball teams...Jordan is a poor disgruntled "cubbie" fan...I guess with that, Clayton will always be "1 up" on him...) ;)

GAME 1: W.W. 57 W.V. 15 (A lesson to be learned....)

Sometimes you have to look long and hard to find answers that don't seem very likely in certain situations...Tonight would be one of those times. To simply look at a score would make it very easy to say, "wow, this team is terrible...." I like to look at things in an optimistic way. We have 2 choices...We can just say, "this is who we are" or we can say, "this is NOT what I want my effort to continue to reflect..." in other words, "this is NOT who we are"!

Nobody gets to where they want to go without running over a few potholes along the way...You just have to try to avoid the "major" ones...We ran into a team tonight that had all the elements working together...
a) They were quick.
b) They were determined.
c) They were aggressive.
d) They were fundamentally sound.
e) They shot the ball well.
f) They played together....etc...etc...I'm sure you get the picture...

There is no reason why we can't learn from tonight and eventually find the identity of this team as well....I know you guys are capable of much more...
We don't make excuses...
We don't look for the easy solution...
We need to come back tomorrow with a more determined resolve to "work hard" and get over the hump on both ends of the court...

I hope all of you come tomorrow, "focused" and "committed" to do more to make that happen! :)

Player Profile...."Clayton Baugh"

Clayton, or "Mighty Mite" as I like to think of him, has continued to make strides in his game...He shows a better understanding of what we are trying to do out on the floor and I am looking forward to his continued progress. "When" Clayton' ball-handling and confidence reach the same level as that of his "understanding", Clayton is going to be even more valuable to us....Clayton' biggest attribute right now is when he shows up to play defense...He canbe a real pain to our opponents...(Kinda like a gnat that you just can't get!) Hope to see wonderful things this year from him....

Clayton' "other" interests include being a "Cardinal" fan...(that in and of itself endears him to me and speaks volumes about his intellect....) :)

At this time, I am looking for "who wants to participate only"....

"A Good Start....."

The key to anything new is to make sure you get off to a good start. Today was our first day with our final squad and I think we got off to a good start. The key for this season is going to be, "how much can learn..." "How well can we execute what we learn" and "How do we handle adversity along the way..." All of these things we will be exposed to in the next few weeks. I think we can have some success this season, but once again, it' up to each one of you to keep one another "accountable" as well as "encouraged".

As I told you guys earlier today, I will ask a lot of you...I will push you and I will do what I can to keep you motivated. The only thing I ask in return is that you give me "the best" you have. Everything else will take care of itself....So let' keep working hard and reach our potential and move forward with no regrets! :)

"Phase III starts on Monday...."

Well the second phase (Boys Club season) is complete in our path to improvement for our basketball team...Regardless of our record, we made progress in the "execution" of how we played each and every time we tipped off...That is what I want us to continue to focus on as we move forward into the school season...

Beginning on Monday is a "fresh start" for us...It starts with bringing a positive attitude and a committed work ethic to try-outs/practice...As I told you guys, you are the representatives for what I expect...You have had the added opportunity to see what I expect and what it will take to continue our journey forward...Let' make sure that we don't settle for anything less, or accept anything less...

We only have 2 weeks before our school season begins and if today was any indication, we are making those steps still...So let' bring it on Monday so that the others will know what to expect!

Matt. 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven...."

"Positive things tonight...."

One of the things that we must always be looking for is, "are we better today than we were yesterday?" Tonight we had several "positives" to build around as we move forward. As I have been trying to emphasize time and time again, the "execution" comes from the "attitude" and the attitude is reflected in the "effort"...

What we have to remember is, this is NOT what we want to settle for! As we continue to "come together" as a team we will continue to see these positive results...Just remember to keep your focus and reflect on the things that "YOU" know you still need to get better at...

We will be practicing on Saturday at the usual time, so come with the right mindset...See ya then...

"Reminder..."

Game tonight at 6:30....Scrimmage tomorrow evening at the school. Be there by 5:00.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

"Practice...."

We will be going from 8:00 - 10:00 on Saturday....Also, we will have a "scrimmage" on Tuesday at 5:00 at the Middle School....Let me know if that is a problem.

"Expectation...Execution...Energy...."

Tonight' game was once again a "snap shot" of what is our greatest obstacle..."US"! It is impossible for us to compete with anyone if we don't fix these problems...Period!! I can't emphasize enough the importance of playing "within yourself," but we MUST do this with energy...

Tonight I sat outside the gym for almost a half hour before the game watching to see how you would "warm-up"...Needless to say, you "went through the motions" and more concerning to me was that everyone was o.k. with it...

I have been trying to get you guys to see that you can't look around and wait for "someone else" to take charge....Each one of you have to come ready to do what you need to do, not come ready to just "go through the motions"....Bottom line is, if you show up expecting to lose, that is exactly what you will do...

We continue to not see the importance of executing the little things...(defensively, I am constantly having to tell players to "stay home" because you lack the discipline on your own...) We still don't understand the importance of "blocking out" rather than trying to "jump" with players that we have no chance of out jumping...These are examples of not playing "smart"...Offensively, we continue to turn the ball over every time we get pressured because we don't know what to do or we "just quit" on the play....We continue to make pathetic passes, pathetic decisions and then jog back when we turn the ball over...I have never accepted this kind of play and I won't start now...

"Lackluster play" is a cancer....It spreads throughout a team and will not go away by itself...This is unacceptable! I told everyone during conditioning, there is NO excuse for being lazy...I can't use a player that doesn't care about getting better...I think some of you need to really search inside and decide how bad you want to get better....If you think it' not that important to you, I am sure there will be opportunities for you in the Community Center league...

I should not have to keep talking about the same things over and over...Let' do something about it...(so I don't have to...)

"Don't get too discouraged...."

I know the games on Tuesday were not as we wanted, but as I told you, "nothing" was that surprising to me...We have alot of work to get done, but it' work that we are capable of doing if we are committed to getting better...This is going to require a level of determination, as well as a focus that maybe some of you haven't had to "call upon" in the past...

This blog will be the primary form of my communication from here on out....On occasion I may drop a group "message" or send a text, but make sure that you get logged in as a "follower" asap so you can stay up to date on everything you need to know...

We will be practicing on Saturday again from 8:00 -10:00. (You know what time that means you need to be there....) We will also be working with the Coach Nevill and his 7th grade team for part of that time....Come ready to work hard! Come ready to improve! :)

Prov. 25:21 "The desires of the "slothful"(lazy) killeth him; for his hands refuse to labor..."
Translation: You have to work hard to get the results you seek...(There is no other way!) :)

"The Start To A New Season...."

As the time approaches for a new basketball season, I want to take this opportunity to let you know what to expect in the upcoming season(s)....

I like to look at our season(s) in segments. For those of you that participated in "conditioning", you have been a part of "Segment 1"....

Segment 2 is about to begin for some of you. This segment is the "Boys Club" season. This segment is geared toward "refreshing" as well as implimenting much of our team strategies for the "school season", aka, "Segment 3".

After our school season is completed, you will have the opportunity to participate in Segment 4. Segment 4 is for those that are interested in participating on a "travel" team that will play in 3-4 tournaments. I will make this available to the first 8 players that make the commitment to it...If more than 8 want to participate, I will have to see if we have enough to field a second team..I will be giving more information in regards to this toward the end of the school season. (Be thinking about whether you want to participate...)

My perspective is very simple..."I will do my best to help those that want to get better at the game of basketball so that they can continue to play at the next level."

Finally, for those that did not register at the Boys Club...You should take advantage of the opportunity you have to work to stay in condition. Don't just "lay around" and lose what you've worked to gain...

Here are a few pics that I thought you might enjoy to keep you motivated.... :)
